Emma was trying to think back to why it was that she had grown to love trains so very much. She came to the conclusion that it probably dated back to her teenage years where normally at least once a year she would go and spend three to four or even five days with her aunty and uncle who lived in a picturesque small English town next to the railway station which dated back many years. Emma was from a large city and had grown up in a high-rise block of apartments where she would often wake to the sound of sirens or noisy neighbours. Emma was not unhappy at home but when she knew she had an opportunity to go and stay with her uncle and aunt in the quiet and quaint surroundings of their English country town their arose in her kind of excitement that she didn’t often feel. When Emma was fortunate enough to enjoy a lovely long weekend at her uncle and aunts’ home, she loved to sit in the bay window and look out of the window onto the small high street that stretched down the hill before her. The red brick of the buildings including the railway bridge just a few metres away painted a picturesque image in Emma’s mind that would stay with her for life. Perhaps to live in such close proximity to a train station was not so much fun for Emma’s uncle and aunty but for Emma herself it was almost soothing to sit in the quiet stillness on a Sunday afternoon in what felt like her favourite place in the world and watch the trains roll in and roll out about every half an hour or so. These days Emma spends much of her time sitting on underground trains now that she had moved to live and work in London. Granted the tube in rush hour wasn’t quite the same yet nothing would ever take away from Emma her absolute love of trains and railways and railway bridges and train stations that had grown within her from those happy teenage memories.
Well, Emma is in fact a fictional character to illustrate how many of us may find ourselves falling in love with a certain magic that trains and railways seem to bring.
